Veneers vs Dental Crowns

Crowns and veneers are dental restoration techniques for improving the function and look of your teeth. Here are some of the many ways these two procedures are different.

Thickness and Appearance

A veneer can be described as a wafer-thin porcelain layer approximately 1mm in thickness. It is carefully placed on the front of the tooth. Most people prefer the method because of its aesthetic appeal, as it shows less gum margin.

On the other hand, a dental crown has twice the thickness of a veneer and envelops the entire tooth.

Usage

Veneers are ideal for minor smile corrections. They help conceal mild gaps and other irregularities like cracked or misaligned teeth.

However, dental crowns offer more than just a cosmetic fix. They are used to strengthen decayed and weak teeth. Besides this, a dental crown can also be used to restore the tooth's natural size and shape and improve its appearance. Dental crowns are ideal for people with severely broken down teeth or those who suffer from bruxism (grinding teeth). They are used to improve the smile if the patient has insufficient tooth structure to support a veneer.

Durability

Veneers provide a temporary dental solution. They need to be replaced after a few years.

However, a crown is your best bet if you're looking for a permanent restoration technique. They are durable and long-lasting- making them worth the money spent.

Cost

In terms of cost, ceramic and porcelain crowns are more expensive than veneers. However, most dental insurance companies cover part of the cost, making them affordable for people who want a durable dental restoration solution.

Types of Dental Crowns

If your dentist has advised you to use dental crowns, then you should know that multiple options exist. These include:

All-Ceramic Dental Crowns

These are the most popular crowns because they seamlessly mimic the color of natural teeth. Hence, it is hard for others to tell if you have a dental crown. Besides this, other benefits of ceramic crowns are that they are biocompatible and have excellent restorative and protective qualities.

Metal Crowns

These dental crowns are made with copper, gold, platinum, and base metals like cobalt-chromium and nickel-chromium. They are often created with a mixture of a metal alloy base and different metals. They are ideal for restoring molars as they are strong and durable. Metal crowns don't wear down easily.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

This type of dental crown features a metal base with porcelain infused on the top. These dental crowns are ideal for those who prefer strength more than the visual appearance of the crown.

At Gibson & Bartholomew Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry, we provide both dental restoration methods - veneers and crowns. Visit our dental clinic for an oral examination.
