What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants help to replace tooth roots in order to replace your teeth. They are embedded into the jaw where they fuse with the bone to provide a strong base on which to attach a replacement tooth (crown). Dental implants act exactly like your own teeth. They are strong enough to cope with normal chewing and biting forces and require no special maintenance as long as you have a regular twice-daily oral hygiene routine supplemented with dental check-ups as often as recommended.
How Do Multiple Dental Implants Differ from Single Dental Implants?
While a single implant may be used to replace each missing tooth, in some circumstances it may be preferable to consider other multiple dental implant options that may be more affordable as well as more suitable. Some of the procedures to consider include:
All-on-4® Treatment Concept
The All-on-4 is a permanent option for patients who have lost most, or all, of their teeth in either jaw. The procedure replaces a complete arch of teeth on four dental implants which are embedded into the jaw at strategic locations to create a trapezoid force that holds the arch firmly in place.
The procedure differs from traditional, single dental implants because the two implants positioned in the rear of the mouth are longer in the All-on-4 procedure and they are inserted into the jawbone at a 45-degree angle rather than 90-degrees. These factors provide more implant-to-bone contact and a greater surface area for the bone and implant to knit together, also referred to as osseointegration, which will produce a strong platform to hold the arch of teeth.
Implant-Supported Bridge
For patients who have several missing teeth in a row, an implant-supported bridge could be a solution rather than a traditional bridge. Instead of the natural teeth on either side of a gap having dental crowns to support a bridge, implants can be inserted at each end of the gap to support a bridge.
Implant-Supported Denture
Another solution for patients who are missing all of their teeth is an implant-supported denture. Unlike full dentures which are held in place by suction, which can make them unstable and liable to moving or falling out, an implant-supported denture is securely attached to dental implants. This procedure differs from the All-on-4 because the prosthetic teeth are fixed permanently in an All-on-4, whereas an implant-supported denture is removable.
Am I Suitable for Dental Implants?
If your general health is good, dental implants may well be a good choice for you.
